It’s easy to get caught up in our routines, so I’ve been making a conscious effort to seek out experiences that nourish creativity and connection. One of those highlights was an escape from my usual Markham schedule for an day in the city.
Recently, I was invited to Kandl Artistique in Yorkville. Touted as the world's first luxury candle customization lab, this atelier offers more than just a class; it’s an invitation to slow down and create something deeply personal.
For anyone looking for a unique and meaningful thing to do in Toronto, I have to share the details of our beautiful Betty² girls day!
Before you even step inside, you're greeted by a piece of history. Kandl Artistique is located at 88 Avenue Road in a designated heritage building.
Part of a row known as "Perry's Block," the structure dates back to circa 1885 and is a beautiful example of Victorian commercial architecture.
There is a wonderful juxtaposition between the historic brick facade and the modern, minimalist luxury that awaits inside.
It feels like you are stepping out of history and into a contemporary sanctuary.
Our experience began at the chic espresso and wine café, Kandl Café. We chose a lovely spot on their patio, a perfect vantage point to watch the city move while we took a moment to pause, catch up and people watch 🤭.
I started with Mango Bellinis, a sparkling prelude that set a celebratory tone for our what's to come! It was the perfect way to transition into the creative mindset the workshop calls for.
A thoughtful touch to elevate your experience: you can pre-order a charcuterie board to savor in their beautiful Kandl café.
It arrives as the perfect interlude during the 30-minute wait while your custom candle cools and is elegantly packaged.
This is where the magic happens. We did the Glowness Lab class, and our guide, Bella, was incredible. You’re led to their "scent library," which is basically a perfumer's playground with endless essential oils to explore.
I'm in my cozy fall era, so I was immediately drawn to a blend that felt both clean and smoky.
My final trio was:
C3 - Green Tea (for that serene, spa-like feel)
H3 - Lavender (a timeless classic for a reason)
R3 - Incense & Oud (for warmth, smoke, and a bit of drama)
Side Note: I keep seeing the number 333 - and I realized after, that I my scents were: 333!
You get to play alchemist, mixing the oils yourself before pouring your own candle. It’s a hands-on process that’s surprisingly therapeutic.
Once the scented wax was poured, we moved on to what was perhaps the most meaningful part of the process: naming our creations. I called my candle Dahlia Freya Lam. The name is a story in itself: Dahlia, for the flower that represents elegance and inner strength, and Freya, after the Norse Goddess of love, beauty, and war—a quiet reminder of the duality we hold as women. To complete the intention, I added a Rose Quartz crystal ✨️.
For those who appreciate the practical details, here is a clear breakdown of the offerings and prices. It’s an investment in a truly memorable experience.

So, is the experience worth it? Without a doubt, YES! In a world of mass production, taking the time to create something bespoke feels like a true luxury. It’s a perfect gift to yourself or a loved one and an ideal setting for a meaningful girls' day or a unique date night. It was absolutely worth the trip from Markham to experience a world-class creative concept right here in our city.
