Wearable Memories

As humans, we are natural storytellers. We crave physical objects that anchor us to our favorite memories, the people we love, and the experiences that shape us. But when the creation of those objects also helps better the world? That brings a whole new level of meaning. Recently, my doppelganger, Betty #2, and I wanted a wholesome girls' day out, so we visited the brand-new location of The Gem Studio at the Shops at Don Mills.

What is The Gem Studio?

If you haven't heard of The Gem Studio, they are a space that empowers people through silversmithing, custom charms, and permanent jewelry. As they perfectly state in their own mission: "Gem Studio was founded with one mission: to give everyone the chance to create their own jewelry, whether it’s a meaningful gift, a fun outing with friends, or a personal treat." With hands-on learning and expert guidance, they make the creative process incredibly easy and memorable. At Gem Studio, it’s not just about jewelry; it’s about memories, creativity, and connection.

Crafting with Compassion

What brings an entirely new level of meaning to this experience is their humanitarian work. A portion of all profits goes directly to supporting an orphanage in Uganda. They also sell rings crafted by young girls in Nepal who have been rescued from sexual violence, donating 100% of the proceeds back to them. You are helping uplift communities globally while you craft.

Designing Our Friendship Jewelry

Knowing the impact of the studio made our session feel incredibly special. We both hit the custom charm bar to create pieces that represented our individual lives - a beautiful, grown-up version of friendship bracelets.

Betty #2 designed a gorgeous, statement-making charm necklace. I decided to go with a charm bracelet. I absolutely love wearing gold jewelry, so naturally, I selected a beautiful gold chain and curated an entirely gold stack. Every charm I picked serves as a symbol of my identity and connections:

  • ✨ Make a Wish: An 11:11 charm, because I am that girl who still makes a wish every time I catch the clock at exactly 11:11.

  • 🌙 Fly Me to the Moon: A delicate crescent moon because I absolutely love the classic Frank Sinatra song.

  • 🦋 A Touch of Magic: A sparkly butterfly for a beautiful aesthetic touch.

  • ♓️ My Zodiac: My Pisces sign to represent my own intuition.

  • 🦁 A Nod to My Partner: My boyfriend's Leo sign so I can carry a piece of him with me.

  • 🔫 A Shared Memory: Two tiny revolvers as a hilarious, sweet reminder of his love for James Bond 007 and a recent date we had going airsoft shooting!

Why You Need to Book a Workshop

Leaving The Gem Studio, we had physical reminders of a beautiful afternoon, but we also felt loved supporting a business that gives back. If you are looking for unique things to do in Toronto, a creative date idea, or a memorable girls' day out that supports a greater cause, I can't recommend The Gem Studio enough!
