I do love Toronto’s hospitality scen - but lately, my friends and I have been looking for ways to change up our usual Friday night itinerary. While I will always enjoy a beautiful dinner reservation, there is something so refreshing about adding a tactile, offline experience into the mix.
Navigating our thirties means actively seeking out spaces where we can engage our hands and our minds in something creative, and genuinely connect with the people sitting across from us before heading out for a bite!
I visited their original Gerrard Street East location years ago and have been meaning to go back. When I heard they opened a massive, 4,000-square-foot location right in the financial district, I immediately booked a session with the girls. Located at 40 King Street West (Unit C122 inside Scotia Plaza), it is highly accessible and fully integrated into the PATH. Here is exactly why this needs to be on your Toronto itinerary.
Paint Cabin completely disrupts the standard art class model. You won't find a teacher at the front of the room forcing everyone to paint the exact same landscape. Instead, it operates as a full-service Paint Bar. The playlist is incredible, the energy is relaxed, and they have a fully licensed bar right in the studio serving craft beer, wine, and cocktails. We started our evening with a round of drinks to loosen up before picking up a single brush. The environment is designed to be highly social, making it a fantastic choice for corporate team building, group nights, or a fresh date night idea.
While we were there - there was also another corporate group as well as couples around us!
While we opted for painting on vinyl records, their menu of offerings has expanded significantly. You are given total creative freedom across a variety of mediums. You can book sessions for:
DIY Rustic Wood Sign Making
Tote Bag Painting
String Art & Printmaking
Needle Felting
Glow-in-the-Dark DJ Paint Parties (they even have karaoke and photo booths for larger private events!)
Skilled instructors roam the room to help you blend colors or guide your technique, but the project is entirely yours. We were assigned an instructor and when I messed up my painting - she was there to help me touching up / fix a few things (PHEWF!).
Come with a plan! My girls and I spent a while trying to decide what to paint. I wanted to make something for my boyfriend + might have changed my mind a few times before I started painting 😆. I ended up creating a custom mashup (with the help of Gemini Ai) of his Leo sign, my Pisces energy, his love for James Bond films, and our convos about building a kingdom together.
My friends and I laughed at what AI suggested I paint - because I had asked for "easy to paint" or "simple painting ideas" or "painting for beginners-' but none of what they showed me looked 'easy' for me 🤭.
I learned that engaging in a focused, creative task like painting acts as a form of active meditation. It requires just enough focus to keep your mind from wandering to your emails, but it's relaxing enough to actively lower your cortisol. You leave feeling incredibly grounded.
We opted for a dessert and beverage package that included our drinks and a post-painting gelato, which rounded out the evening perfectly (they also offer catering menus and s'mores kits for larger groups). It was wonderful to see the owner, Anita, and catch up; she is incredibly passionate and has cultivated a brilliant, zero-judgment space.
The absolute best part? The location is wildly convenient. Situated in Scotia Plaza, it is literally steps from Joey King Street. Transitioning from our painting session to a late dinner & cocktails took less than two minutes.
If you are looking to elevate your social calendar with something hands-on and effortlessly cool, Paint Cabin King West is the reservation to make.
