#Hosted | We often think that to find peace, we have to go far. But I like to believe what we are actually craving isn't always distance - it’s novelty and comfort.
Growing up, History was always one of my favourite classes. I was the girl who needed to know the who, what, where, when, and why. I even served as the Historian for my sorority for two years in a row before graduating! I have always been drawn to storytelling—to understanding the layers of the past that exist beneath the surface of the present.
That deep curiosity is exactly what drew me to The Postmark Hotel. Located just a short drive from Toronto on historic Main Street Newmarket, this property isn't just a place to sleep. It is the town's first and only boutique hotel, and a stunning example of 'Adaptive Reuse' - taking a building with a soul and giving it a new life!
Before you book your stay, you need to understand the legend you are walking into.
The "Old Reliable" Origin Story: The building was completed around April 1915, serving as the federal post office. The clock tower (shipped from England) was a marvel of engineering. It ran so flawlessly for 45 years that locals nicknamed it "Old Reliable".
The Survival Story: In 2013, a controversial proposal aimed to encase this historic structure inside a condo tower. The community fought back to preserve the integrity of their Main Street landmark, and because of that resilience, the building was saved.

One of the most emotional parts of my stay wasn't the room or the food - it was the hallways.
The hotel design pays homage to its postal roots with art featuring vintage stamps, letters, postcards. I found myself stopping constantly, not just to admire the aesthetic, but because it transported me back to my childhood.
My father has a massive collection of stamps (alongside coins and vintage cameras). I also love receiving and sending out handwritten postcards! I have this vivid memory of helping him as a little girl. We would sit at the table, carefully cutting the corners off international mail. We’d place the paper in a bowl of warm water, waiting patiently for the glue to dissolve. Once the stamp floated free, we’d dry it, and he would let me use the tweezers to place it gently into his collector's booklet.
Historians preserve artifacts, photos, and memoirs. But walking down these halls, I realized that thoughtful design preserves something even more fragile: connection.
The beauty of The Postmark is its versatility. I experienced it in two completely different ways:
Day 1: The Ultimate Girls' Staycation 👯♀️
The Room: We checked into Suite 205 (The Premium King).
The Vibe: This room is the definition of "quiet luxury." With soaring ceilings (thanks to that 1915 architecture), it was perfect for catching up.
Fashion Girl Note: I was happy to know that they had the in-room steamers. We unpacked, steamed our fits, and felt instantly settled.
We went for an evening stroll down Main Street. We loved how it was such a short walk to this chic cocktail bar I made reservations for, Bar Locale.
Brunch on the stunning rooftop, at Overlea details further down below.
Day 2: The Romantic Reset (Early Anniversary) 🥂
The Switch: On Saturday, my boyfriend joined me for an early anniversary celebration, and we moved to Suite 216 (The Executive King).
The Upgrade: For only ~$35 more, this suite features a kitchenette with a microwave, mini-bar, and fully stocked cabinets. It felt less like a hotel room and more like a private apartment.
Dinner on the rooftop at Overlea details below.
You cannot visit without going to the rooftop. The Overlea offers panoramic views of the historic downtown. We started with brunch (try the Grilled and Chilled Shrimp) and returned for my anniversary dinner. The hotel treated us to a 6-Course Chef’s Tasting Menu ($95/pp) with wine pairings! Note: Add a wine pairing for just $55 pp!

Newmarket isn't just a suburb; it’s a town built on connection. Long before it was a trendy getaway, this area was a hub of trade. In fact, as far back as 1814, the town’s first postmaster, William Roe, operated a trading post right here on Main Street.
For over two centuries, this street has been where people gathered to exchange goods, news, and stories. By staying at The Postmark, you are stepping into that continued legacy.
If you see me choosing a hotel to stay at, it is rarely just because of the 5-star rating or the aesthetic. It is likely because something about the building fascinated me.
I look for places that have lived a life before I got there.
It’s not just about the luxury.
It’s about the echo in the hallways.
It’s about the way the light hits a brick wall that was laid by hands a hundred years ago!
It’s about finding a space that doesn’t just host you, but holds you.
I love staying somewhere that makes me feel like I am walking through a memory that isn't mine, but somehow...feels like home.
